“Renewable Energy” is a description of sources of energy that occur and recur naturally. The most widely developed is wind power, which has been transformed from a fledgling ‘bright idea’ into a worldwide industry with annual sale approaching €10 Billion.
Other existing RE industries include small solar, hydro, and energy crops. A new generation of technologies such as anaerobic digestion, wave, tidal stream, pyrolysis and gasification are now being brought to commercial reality.
Why are Renewables proving so attractive? There are four principal drivers.
Demand keeps rising, but traditional supplies do not. Fossil fuel supplies are finite and dwindling. The UK, for example will soon be a net importer of gas.
Environmental benefits: particularly reduced Carbon Dioxide emissions. New coal plants are viewed as unacceptable in most democracies.
Security of supply: most countries have existing RE resources, and are getting nervous about shipping fossil fuels such as gas over vast distances across unstable countries.
Simple Economics: Renewables are becoming lower cost than fossil fuel alternatives. While it is almost impossible to calculate the true cost of nuclear, it is believed to be substantially more than gas or wind. The other Renewables are coming down in cost all the time, to offer electricity supplies that are both affordable and non-polluting.
